North Queensland’s Townsville City Netball Association is leading the way for inclusion in netball with their ‘open door’ approach to welcoming all the different communities in the region.
To acknowledge its effort in actively creating an inclusive environment, the association has been recognised with an Australia Post One Netball Community Award.
Townsville City Netball Association development and participation officer Adriana Boske is proud of the work they are doing locally.
“We have put a lot of work into our inclusion program, so to be nominated and awarded was a big honour,’ Boske said.
The association runs multiple programs catering to individuals from all backgrounds, including an Inclusion NetSetGO program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, programs for adults with both mental and physical abilities and clinics for young women from the Cleveland Detention Centre.
‘’All our programs are very special. The improvement and participation from individuals is amazing,” Boske said.
“We have our adult all abilities team taking part in the pre-game opener for a state league match, while we have five girls from the detention centre who are now out of the centre and registered to play competitively.”
As part of their prize as a Community Award winner, the club was visited by former NSW Swifts player and Australia Post One Netball Ambassador, Sonia Mkoloma, who attended a local school to run a clinic as part of its sport program.
“We know how much this award means to the community and the organisations that we have been working with, so to have Sonia visit was very exciting,” Boske said.
“Most students are from small rural communities in far north Queensland, so being in the presence of a star player like Sonia, they were in awe of her and so excited to be working with her.”
The year ahead is a busy one for Townsville City Netball association as it looks to build upon its inclusion programs and tries to get more boys and other sports involved.
Congratulations to Townsville City Netball Association for winning an Australia Post One Netball Community Award.
